Questions and Answers with our Entomologist:

Q: Why did you choose Entomology?

A: “I chose entomology after being influenced by a job. I was able to work with fruit producers fighting fruit flies in field production. Therefore, I experienced, first-hand, the impact insects had on individuals’ livelihood. This ability to understand how insects could affect the natural world continued. Soon, my interest shifted to focus on public health and how insects affect humans globally.”

Damselfly

Q: What are your favorite insects and why?

A: “While mosquitoes are my true research passion, my favorite insects are Damselflies and small Scarab Beetles. I always enjoy watching each of these insect groups’ behavior. Also, each of these family groups have very brightly colored species!”

Q: What entomology projects have you worked on in the past?

A: “I have worked on insect research projects that range from public health to ornamental plants. Some specific insects I worked with in these fields are mosquitoes, spotted wing fruit flies, black cutworms, leaf hoppers, and aphids. Also, I have enjoyed working in the community teaching individuals about the importance of insects. For example, I particularly enjoy education projects with the next generation of youth. I hope to continue to spread the fun in our youth by helping the local 4-H program and through Wichita event booths for Patton.”

Home Sweet Wichita

Q: Since moving to Wichita, what have you noticed about the city? Do you have any favorite local spots? Is Wichita different from other places you’ve lived?

A: “I have thoroughly enjoyed moving to Wichita, KS. I love being part of an area that is so festive. Moving to the area in December, I experienced all the Christmas lights and holiday parties, making this place feel like home. Being part of such a large community has broadened my interest in teaching about insects to urban areas. Wichita is a larger city. However, it has a small town feel thanks to the polite & kind residents. Some of my favorite spots are located in the Delano District, I love being able to have that small-town main street aspect. I also enjoy hitting local restaurants around Wichita, such a variety of cultures and cuisines, exploring has been an amazing adventure.”
