Ticks Lead to Summer Bummers

Don’t let ticks interrupt your summer party plans. In order to enjoy your yard and time outside with your family, managing pests is required. Work with Patton Termite & Pest Control to take an offensive approach to pest control. With Patton’s help, protect your outdoor spaces and create a pest-free zone to keep your family, friends and pets safe.

Tick Bites and Symptoms of Disease

Ticks feed on mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. They find their hosts by detecting animals´ breath and body odors, or by sensing body heat, moisture, and vibrations. To wait for a host, they rest on the tips of grasses and shrubs. When a host brushes the spot where a tick is waiting, the tick quickly climbs aboard. Once they attach to their host, ticks transmit pathogens that can cause disease through the process of feeding. If you find a tick on yourself, use tweezers to grasp it as close to the skin’s surface as possible. Pull upward with steady pressure and remove any remaining mouth-parts with tweezers. After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water. Dispose of the tick by placing it in a sealed bag or flushing it down the toilet. If you develop a fever or chills, aches, pains, or a rash after receiving a tick bite, see a doctor.

Prevent Ticks in Your Backyard

Ticks are just one of many nuisances that can turn a fun time outside into a nightmare. The natural world, and the pests who live there, can seem unbeatable. In addition to monthly service from Patton, there are other steps you can take to minimize ticks and other pests in your yard. Keeping your yard properly maintained is your best chance at avoiding ticks. Keep your grass cut short, remove leaf piles as well as any accumulations of organic debris. Also be sure to prune shrubs and bushes to prevent overgrowth. Create a barrier of wood chips or gravel between lawns and wooded areas to restrict tick migration into recreational areas. Finally, reach out to Patton to treat your home’s exterior and build a layer of protection around your property.
